Chimera

Chimera is from Greek mythology. It's made up of a lot of different animals but more recently I've seen it be the name of an assissin--in more than one book. It's also the name of an almost-invisible being that lived in a the dark and wanted only to kill.
Does anyone have any idea how it morphed into being an assasin-like creature?

the old chimera is supposed to have been killed by bellerophontes i think. its in the illiad. b~ was sent over to an asia minor kingdom by a mainland greek king that he had pissed off. the king gave him a token to give to the guy putting him up at the other end. the token actually meant that he should get B~ killed/got rid of. so he sent him off to the chimera which he defeated - he wasn't meant to do that ( he did it by pouring molten lead down its throat as it tried to breath fire) . anyway, this is said to be the only reference to writing in the illiad.
but the chimera that lives in the dark and only wants to kill...is it still alive? who has it killed? what's the story?
