Do you believe that political discourse is substantively worse now? My feeling is that the form has simply changed. Two hundred years ago, they had duels. Today, we have robocalls and tweets.

There is also the matter of what it means to be a politician, two hundred years ago a politician - meaning a leader of the country/state, seemed to have many jobs : writer, leader in battle, artist, builder - today, most are all lawyers and business background. Shame, that. I think we are all suffering for it too.
