Seeking source about a certain theme in african mythology

I'm generalizing hard here but the central theme of African paganism is social harmony, like how the central theme of Mesoamerican paganism was the necessity of sacrifice or the importance of righteous duty in Hindu legends

I'd describe it as "manistic". Humans take center stage in African tales. And relationships between humans are of the utmost importance. The bulk of the myths are about the first human being, and how he spent his life. This first human takes the place of the elaborate pantheons of squabbling deities in other cultures. He's usually a shapeshifting trickster. He'll enjoy taking shapes like a hare, tortoise, or even a spider...
Is there any truth to this? Can someone point out a link or book which supports it?
