Succubus and incubus

I've always wondered about the stories about succubus and incubus. It makes me wonder what actually caused the "sightings" or attacks of these types of creatures. Was it a poisoning that caused the phenomenon? Could it have been the same thing that caused the "witch" sightings in Salem?

Sleep paralysis is often thought to have caused hallucinations of succubi and incubi. Wet dreams were attributed to their seductive behaviour as the sleeping person has no control over his or her body, and orgasm or ejaculation outside of married intercourse was considered sinful.

That makes sense. Early peoples also ate and drank a lot of things that would inadvertently or on purpose cause hallucinations. That could cause some of it.

Quentin-I think the cause of the hallucinations of the accusers of the people who were accused of witchcraft was ergot from tainted/mildewed rye or wheat. They also were victims of teen age angst which is almost as bad.
